About the event

Objectives of workshop: The course Objectives are to familiarise attendees with surgical approach and exposure of blood vessels using cadavers. The workshop ultimately aims to improve vascular surgical safety, operative confidence and operative efficiency in a way that cannot be provided by routine surgical supervision or by other simulated environments.

Learning outcomes: By the end of the course, participants will be expected to develop reasonable understanding and skills of open vascular surgical exposure to the following areas: Neck - Thorax - Abdomen - Upper limb - Lower limb

Method of Delivery: The course consists of sessions which are fully interactive with an emphasis placed on knowledgeable faculty who provide superior training and immediate feedback in a practical and controlled environment. It will be delivered using the following methods: - Pre-reading - Lectures - Discussion - Practical suture technique on plastic models - Practical suture technique on animal tissues - Practical dissection of human cadavers

Work Plan: Each cadaver will be assigned to small group of participants for the whole period of the course - Tutors will be circulating through all workstations.

Syllabus:

  • Arterial exposure and basic skills - Anatomy of the femoral triangle - Exposure of Femoral Artery & Trans-femoral Embolectomy - Exposure of Popliteal artery and other lower limb arteries - Exposure of Abdominal Aorta, Iliacs and Visceral Branches (Trans and retropertoneal) - Exposure of Carotid Artery and Carotid Endarterectomy - Exposure of the subclavian, axillary and Upper Limb Vessels
  • Dialysis access - Creation of Radio-cephalic, Brachio-cephalic, Brachio-basilic and graft access
  • Basic trauma skills: - Tips for Management of Vascular Trauma - Exposure of IVC and Iliac Veins - Clamshell and Exposure of Arch Branches
