• Objectives of the workshop: The workshop aims to train psychiatrists in Sudan to effectively manage the delicate interaction between spiritual healers and scientific psychiatric practice. It also aims to provide an overview of the potential role of a multidisciplinary team in managing a first-episode psychosis.
• Learning outcomes: By the end of the workshop, an attendee should be able to understand the motives of Sudanese families to seek traditional healing for mental illnesses, become aware of the exact nature of healing practices and objectively critique their potential benefits and harms, recognize and adopt effective strategies to manage the interaction between traditional healing and modern scientific clinical practice and appreciate the role of multidisciplinary expertise in managing first-episode psychosis.
